Challenges
As platform adoption for Teal quickly grew, so did their sales tax requirements.
Molli Gorrell, Operations Coordinator at Teal, started receiving notifications that Teal would soon be reaching nexus thresholds. She made a note to look into it, and began researching how to stay compliant with SaaS sales tax laws. With each state and jurisdiction in the US taxing SaaS products differently, it was much more complicated than she realized.
This led her to search for a sales tax provider, and she found several companies that appeared to be promising at first. However, she found that sales reps were conveniently talking around the costs. Solutions that were seemingly inexpensive quickly added up due to hidden fees and add-ons.
Then she found Zamp, and it’s been smooth sailing ever since. After meeting with the team and learning about Zamp’s one-price model, which includes all services for one fee, the other companies ended up being around $7,000 or $8,000 extra in comparison.
It's really hands-off for us, which is great. And I know that you guys know what you're doing.
Solution
Now that she’s a Zamp customer, Molli benefits from:
Benefit #1: Direct access to sales tax experts
Let’s face it, sales tax is a niche topic. Unless your company has endless money to spend on internal sales tax experts, it can be overwhelming to manage. With Zamp, Molli knows sales tax is fully taken care of, and she can always lean on the team to answer any questions she has.
Being a startup, we don't have a lot of specialized knowledge right now, especially in this kind of financial operations aspect, so it's good that we have somebody that we can lean on. Even when we have questions that are not really your responsibility, you guys are always happy to answer and it's super personal. It's just really nice to work with a company that's like that.
Benefit #2: Time back to focus on business growth
Instead of spending hours wondering which nexus thresholds they’re responsible for, or trying to decipher complicated tax laws, Molli and her team have peace of mind—and time back to focus on what they do best.
It's so much easier now. We don't have to worry about knowing what thresholds actually matter and which ones we can write off for now.
Benefit #3: An unmatched implementation process
The onboarding and implementation with Zamp was a breeze. After following the steps below, Molli was good to go:
- 1. Meet with a dedicated Onboarding Specialist to grant access to Teal’s transactional data.
- 2. Zamp determined Teal's sales tax needs.
- 3. Going forward, Zamp fully manages sales tax, and can be reached by phone or email should any questions come up.
The implementation process for Zamp is the number one biggest seller for you guys, at least from our perspective.
Results
Teal maintains 24/7 sales tax compliance with Zamp, without having to think about it.
While they’ve been partnered with Zamp, Teal has had:
- - 6 months of accurate and timely filing
- - 8 registrations completed
- - 8 state accounts managed
By no longer having to worry about complex sales tax requirements, Molli and her team have time back to focus on what truly moves the needle forward for Teal as they continue to empower job seekers.
Here’s her advice to anyone considering various sales tax providers:
Really push to get through the nitty-gritty of cost. I found that when we were looking at other options, a lot of sales reps were talking around the costs. And then once we finally got them, it was something like $7,000 or $8,000 extra with some of the other competitors.
Working at a SaaS startup requires leveraging cutting edge tech, constantly adapting, and staying on top of market trends. It also means that time is limited.
Why spend that time stressing over sales tax? With Zamp as your partner, you can stay compliant while you get back to your most important to-do’s.
