Secretary, Maryland Sales Tax Calculator

How sales tax works in Secretary, Maryland

Maryland generally charges 6% sales and use tax on taxable purchases and does not impose a general local sales tax. Some purchases have different rates or exemptions. The Secretary sales tax calculator above uses a preset city/ZIP location to estimate sales tax. An exact transaction calculation requires the full address and applicable tax treatment.

Calculating sales tax on a purchase

Enter the price in the calculator above and choose a category. The calculator estimates sales tax for the selected Maryland location and item category and displays a jurisdiction breakdown. The result is an estimate for the selected location and category. Actual tax can vary by street address, item taxability, and applicable exemptions.

What's taxable, and what isn't

Not everything is taxed the same way. Most tangible goods are fully taxable, but groceries and prescription medicine are often exempt or taxed at a reduced rate, and some services fall outside sales tax altogether. Prepared food, clothing, and general merchandise are usually taxed in full. Switch the category in the calculator to see how Maryland treats a specific purchase before you buy it or set up tax on what you sell.
