The best sales tax automation software for Adobe Commerce is Zamp, offering managed compliance support that can be done for you or done with you, covering registrations, filings, notice management, and audit support under custom-scoped, all-in-one pricing with shared liability if a filing error occurs. Other options include Avalara, TaxJar, TaxCloud, and Vertex.
Adobe Commerce applies rates at checkout but does not register your business in new states, file returns with state revenue authorities, monitor nexus thresholds, or manage the tax notices that follow. Merchants with multi-state sales typically need a third-party integration, and the wrong choice means billing surprises, missed deadlines, and compliance risk your finance team absorbs alone.
Adobe Commerce powers more than 130,000 active storefronts worldwide and generates $173 billion in annual gross merchandise value. It does not monitor economic nexus thresholds, register merchants in new states, or file returns with state revenue authorities. Every Adobe Commerce merchant with multi-state sales needs a third-party solution for that, and the options range from calculation plugins to fully managed compliance services for Adobe Commerce that handle everything end to end.
This guide reviews the five best sales tax automation software options for Adobe Commerce merchants in 2026: Zamp, Avalara, TaxCloud, TaxJar, and Vertex. Each has a distinct service model and level of ongoing support. The right choice depends on your transaction volume, B2B exemption volume, multi-store footprint, and how much tax work you want to own internally.
TL;DR: Adobe Commerce handles checkout-level calculations but not compliance. Merchants with multi-state sales typically need a third-party solution for registrations, filings, and remittance. This guide reviews five options: Zamp, Avalara, TaxCloud, TaxJar, and Vertex. Zamp offers managed support, done for you or done with you, custom-scoped pricing, liability sharing, and full-lifecycle compliance from registration through audit defense.
Key takeaways
- Adobe Commerce provides basic checkout tax calculation but does not handle state registration, filing, or remittance. Merchants with multi-state sales typically need a third-party extension for full compliance.
- Adobe removed its bundled Vertex extension in version 2.4.4, released in April 2022. Merchants on 2.4.4 or later must now obtain a standalone tax extension separately from the Commerce Marketplace.
- Economic nexus thresholds, set at $100,000 in annual sales in most states, affect Adobe Commerce merchants the same way they affect every other ecommerce seller. Multi-store setups must aggregate volume across all storefronts when measuring exposure.
- Adobe Commerce is a leading ecommerce platform for B2B and B2C merchants, and B2B stores often carry additional tax complexity because of resale certificates, tax-exempt accounts, and wholesale order workflows.
- Transparent, predictable pricing is a meaningful differentiator in this category.
- Zamp shares liability with the merchant. If Zamp makes a filing error or misses a deadline, Zamp covers penalties and interest, not the merchant.
Why Adobe Commerce needs third-party sales tax software
Adobe Commerce does not offer native state registration management, multi-jurisdiction filing, or remittance automation. All three require a third-party extension. Adobe Commerce handles checkout calculations; it does not handle compliance.
Adobe’s own documentation describes the platform’s built-in tax configuration as a rate-and-rule calculation engine. You can manually enter tax rates by state or jurisdiction, assign product tax classes, and apply basic rules at checkout. What you cannot do natively is monitor whether cumulative sales have crossed an economic nexus threshold in a given state, file a return with that state’s revenue authority, or respond to a tax notice automatically.
This gap widened significantly in 2022. Adobe removed the bundled Vertex extension starting with Commerce version 2.4.4. Versions 2.4.0 through 2.4.3 had shipped with the Vertex connector pre-installed. Merchants upgrading to 2.4.4 or later now need to independently source and install a tax extension from the Commerce Marketplace rather than relying on a pre-configured tool.
The compliance burden is especially pronounced for B2B sellers. Adobe Commerce is widely used by B2B and B2C merchants, and B2B stores often carry additional tax complexity because of resale certificates, tax-exempt accounts, and wholesale order workflows. B2B transactions involve a layer of tax complexity that most consumer-focused tools were not designed to handle: resale certificate validation at checkout, tax-exempt customer account management, and wholesale order exemptions. A software tool that calculates tax accurately for consumer transactions may still generate errors or require manual overrides for every exempt B2B order unless it was built to handle that use case.
The compliance stakes are also rising. According to the ecommerce sales tax compliance data, most growing businesses trigger nexus faster than they expect, creating sudden compliance requirements across multiple states simultaneously. For Adobe Commerce merchants running multi-store or B2B environments, that exposure compounds with each additional sales channel and customer segment.
Why Adobe Commerce teams choose managed sales tax support
Adobe Commerce merchants often look for a sales tax partner when checkout calculation alone no longer covers the full compliance workload.
More predictable compliance operations. Adobe Commerce merchants need clear reporting, reliable registrations and filings, and support from people who understand sales tax. Zamp combines intelligent automation with dedicated tax experts so finance teams are not left managing registrations, filings, notices, and audit support on their own.
According to market research, the sales tax software category has grown at 8.6% annually, reflecting how many merchants have discovered that software alone is not enough. The shift toward managed services reflects a recognition that calculation is only one part of compliance.
What to look for in Adobe Commerce sales tax software
The best sales tax automation software for Adobe Commerce connects to your store in real time, monitors nexus across every sales channel, and handles the compliance work that sits upstream and downstream of checkout calculations.
Eight criteria separate comprehensive solutions from basic ones:
- Native Commerce Marketplace extension. A verified, maintained extension from the Adobe Commerce Marketplace means cleaner installation, ongoing compatibility updates, and access to Adobe support channels if integration issues arise.
- Real-time calculation at checkout. Tax rates must reflect the buyer’s exact address, product taxability, and any applicable exemptions at the moment of transaction. Stale cached rate tables create liability when rates change between billing cycles.
- Multi-store nexus aggregation. Adobe Commerce merchants often run multiple storefronts. Economic nexus thresholds must be calculated across the combined sales volume of all stores and connected channels, not per storefront in isolation.
- B2B exemption certificate management. Tax-exempt B2B customers must be validated at checkout without creating manual review queues. Resale certificates must be stored, validated, and tracked for renewal on schedule.
- State registration management. Crossing a new nexus threshold requires registering with that state’s department of revenue before collecting tax. Many calculation tools do not handle registrations at all, leaving that step entirely to the merchant.
- Automated filing and remittance. A tool that calculates accurately but does not file returns leaves the most time-consuming part of compliance to the merchant. Filing automation should include preparation, submission, and payment.
- Proactive notice management. States send notices routinely. A managed service can help address notices before they turn into larger compliance issues.
- Transparent pricing. Per-transaction and per-filing fee structures are common in this category and generate unpredictable billing as order volume scales. Transparent, predictable pricing is easier to budget.
The best Adobe Commerce sales tax software covers the full lifecycle: calculation, registration, filing, notice management, and audit defense. Calculation-only tools leave the most labor-intensive compliance work to the merchant.

How we evaluated Adobe Commerce sales tax software
We scored each platform on six criteria: native Adobe Commerce Marketplace extension availability, real-time calculation accuracy across U.S. and international jurisdictions, multi-store nexus aggregation, B2B exemption certificate handling, filing and remittance automation, and pricing transparency. We also weighted verified buyer reviews and hands-on integration documentation for Adobe Commerce 2.4.
Products are ranked by how completely they handle the full compliance lifecycle, not just checkout calculation, for Adobe Commerce merchants. A tool that calculates accurately but leaves registrations, filings, and notices to the merchant scores lower than one that handles the full stack. Based on our analysis, Zamp is the only platform on this list that meets all six criteria.

1. Zamp: best overall for Adobe Commerce
Available on the Adobe Commerce Marketplace. Pricing: custom-scoped, all-in-one pricing based on the merchant’s actual business footprint.
Our #1 pick. Zamp is the best sales tax automation software for Adobe Commerce merchants who want flexible managed compliance, whether they want Zamp to do it for them or with them. It offers managed sales tax support covering every part of the compliance lifecycle: registrations, calculations, filings, notice management, and audit support. The merchant connects the extension, chooses the level of oversight they want, and Zamp handles execution. Unlike software-only tools that deliver accurate calculations but leave registrations, filings, and notices to the merchant, Zamp takes care of everything.
The Zamp Tax extension for Adobe Commerce provides real-time rooftop-accurate rates across 13,000+ U.S. jurisdictions and 70+ countries, connected through the Zamp API directly to Zamp’s intelligent platform. Installation is available through Composer or manual upload, and the Zamp for Adobe Commerce setup guide walks merchants through API credential configuration, historical transaction syncing, and tax-exempt customer management. Average onboarding time is under 2 hours from start to live calculation, compared to the weeks or months typically required for legacy enterprise platforms.
Zamp operates in two service models to fit different finance team operating styles:
- Done for you: Zamp takes care of everything. Registrations, filings, notices, and audit support are all handled by Zamp’s team. The merchant approves where required; Zamp executes.
- Done with you: The merchant reviews with more oversight. Zamp handles execution. This model is suited for controllers who prefer holding the keys on approvals while still offloading the operational work.
For B2B Adobe Commerce stores, Zamp manages resale certificate collection and storage, validates exemptions at checkout, and tracks certificate renewal schedules. This is part of the standard service with no additional module to license or configure. More on how the Adobe Commerce API integration works.
The pricing structure is custom-scoped, all-in-one pricing with no per-transaction fees, no per-filing charges, and no separate line items for state registrations or notice handling. This eliminates the billing surprises that Adobe Commerce merchants commonly report after scaling on transaction-based platforms.
The Zamp Commitment: If Zamp makes a filing error or misses a filing deadline, Zamp covers the resulting penalties and interest. Not the merchant. That liability-sharing model is a major Zamp differentiator.
Key features:
- Real-time rooftop-accurate rates across 13,000+ U.S. jurisdictions and 70+ countries

3. TaxCloud

As a Certified Service Provider, TaxCloud’s fees are funded directly by member states in the SST program. Merchant fees are funded by member states for covered jurisdictions. Other CSPs offering the same model include Avalara, Sovos, and AccurateTax. Merchants selling primarily in SST states can access calculation and filing through this state-funded model. Merchants needing broader coverage should evaluate whether the platform fits their full compliance requirements.
The TaxCloud extension for Adobe Commerce provides checkout calculation, collection, and remittance across U.S. jurisdictions. The integration supports address validation at checkout, product tax code assignment through TaxCloud’s Product Category system, the SST standard for product taxability classification, and tax-exempt customer management. Filing is available directly through TaxCloud’s portal for covered jurisdictions.
TaxCloud’s coverage model is shaped by where the SST subsidy applies. In the 24 SST member states, the state government funds TaxCloud’s fees. Outside those states, merchants evaluate their coverage needs. The model makes TaxCloud accessible for smaller stores or merchants whose customer base is concentrated in SST member states.
B2B exemption certificate management is available within TaxCloud but is more limited in scope compared to enterprise-grade tools. Multi-store aggregation for nexus monitoring is supported.
Key features:
- Certified Service Provider for 24 SST member states
- Calculation, collection, and remittance across U.S. jurisdictions
- Checkout address validation
- Product tax code mapping using SST product category system
- Tax-exempt customer management
4. TaxJar

The TaxJar extension for Adobe Commerce provides real-time rate calculations at checkout and a reporting dashboard showing tax collected by state. TaxJar’s platform covers U.S. jurisdictions and provides automated filing capabilities for merchants who enable the filing service.
TaxJar’s core value proposition is an accessible self-service interface with a tiered software model, with higher tiers adding additional support and filing capabilities.

- Automated filing available on higher-tier plans

Vertex is an enterprise tax compliance platform positioned as an Adobe Commerce Premier Technology Partner. The Vertex Tax Links extension for Adobe Commerce connects to Vertex O Series cloud via a REST-based API, providing rate calculations, address cleansing, and tax-inclusive pricing support at checkout. The move from SOAP to REST-based API architecture in recent versions improves integration reliability for enterprise deployments.
Vertex’s integration includes several enterprise-focused capabilities beyond basic rate calculation. Tax ID validation for international customers is supported through Vertex Validator integration. How to choose the right Adobe Commerce sales tax solution
The right solution depends primarily on how much compliance work your finance team wants to own internally.
If your priority is managed compliance with flexible oversight: Look beyond checkout calculation and confirm whether registrations, filings, notice management, audit support, and liability sharing are included. Zamp is built for teams that want those responsibilities handled through one managed service, with the flexibility to choose done for you or done with you. For more on this category distinction, see the best sales tax compliance software overview.
If your store is primarily B2B: B2B compliance requires resale certificate management, tax-exempt order handling at checkout, and certificate renewal tracking. Evaluate whether exemption management is included in the base service or requires a separate module. Certificate validation failures at checkout create friction for buyers and potential liability for sellers.
If you are on Adobe Commerce 2.4.4 or later: The bundled Vertex extension is no longer available. Any prior Vertex setup from earlier versions must be migrated to a standalone extension. This is an opportunity to evaluate current compliance needs without defaulting to the previously configured tool.
For merchants evaluating Adobe Commerce sales tax options: Look beyond checkout calculation and confirm whether registrations, filings, notice management, audit support, and liability sharing are included. Zamp is built for teams that want those responsibilities handled through one managed service.
For organizations running Adobe Commerce alongside complex back-office systems: Make sure the sales tax solution supports the full compliance lifecycle, not just rate calculation at checkout. Zamp gives Adobe Commerce merchants managed support across registrations, filings, notices, and audit support.
For additional context on how the Adobe Commerce integration works, see the Adobe Commerce integration page. Adobe Commerce merchants evaluating all available options for multi-state ecommerce tax compliance, including those who run additional sales channels or marketplaces alongside Adobe Commerce, will also find useful context in the sales tax compliance for ecommerce overview.
Final verdict
Every Magento sales tax automation decision comes down to one question: how much compliance work does your finance team want to own?
For Adobe Commerce merchants who want managed sales tax support that can be done for them or with them, Zamp is the strongest option. Registrations, filings, notice management, and audit support are all handled under custom-scoped, bundled pricing, with no per-transaction fees, no per-filing fees, and no surprise invoices as order volume grows.
For multi-state B2B Adobe Commerce stores managing resale certificates and tax-exempt customer workflows, Zamp is the strongest option. Exemption certificate management is included in the standard service, and proactive nexus monitoring catches threshold exposure before a new filing obligation begins.
For startups to $300M+ companies that have crossed multiple state nexus thresholds and need liability protection, Zamp is the right choice. The Zamp Commitment covers penalties and interest if Zamp makes a filing error. That liability-sharing model is a major Zamp differentiator.
For finance teams at startups to $300M+ companies that have outgrown calculation-only software and want a managed Adobe Commerce tax integration that takes execution off their hands, Zamp is built for that role. With 97.8% customer retention in 2025, 99.9%+ filing accuracy, and 100,000+ filings completed on time, Zamp is the service finance teams consistently choose to stay with. “The last sales tax service you’ll ever need.”

Frequently asked questions
Does Adobe Commerce handle sales tax automatically?
Adobe Commerce provides a basic tax calculation engine that applies configured rates at checkout. It does not monitor economic nexus thresholds, manage state registrations, file returns with state revenue authorities, or handle tax notices. All of those functions require a third-party extension connected to a compliance service.
What happened to Magento’s bundled Vertex extension?
Adobe included the Vertex extension with Adobe Commerce releases 2.4.0 through 2.4.3. Starting with version 2.4.4, released in April 2022, the bundled Vertex extension was removed from the core platform. Merchants upgrading to version 2.4.4 or later must now obtain a standalone tax extension from the Commerce Marketplace separately and install it independently.
How does economic nexus affect multi-store merchants?
Economic nexus is triggered when a business’s sales in a given state exceed a threshold, typically $100,000 in annual revenue. For Adobe Commerce merchants running multiple storefronts or selling across multiple channels, nexus calculations must aggregate volume across all stores and channels, not on a per-storefront basis. Crossing a threshold requires registering with that state and beginning to collect tax before the next filing period begins.
Does Zamp share liability if they make a filing error?
Yes. The Zamp Commitment covers penalties and interest if Zamp makes a filing error or misses a deadline. The merchant is not responsible for costs resulting from Zamp’s errors. That liability-sharing model is a major Zamp differentiator.
How long does it take to implement Zamp on Adobe Commerce?
Zamp’s average onboarding time is under 2 hours. The extension installs through Composer or manual upload, and Zamp’s team handles account setup, historical transaction review, state registration assessment, and product taxability mapping. Most merchants live with full-service compliance the same day they start.
Is Zamp available on the Adobe Commerce Marketplace?
Yes. The Zamp Tax extension is available on the Adobe Commerce Marketplace, compatible with Adobe Commerce 2.4.x and PHP 8.2.18 or higher. The extension handles real-time calculations, transaction reporting to the Zamp platform, and tax-exempt customer management at checkout.
How do I set up sales tax in Adobe Commerce?
Adobe Commerce includes a built-in tax configuration panel under Stores > Configuration > Sales > Tax, where administrators can enter tax rates by state, assign product tax classes, and apply checkout rules. This covers basic calculation only. For automated compliance, including real-time rate updates, nexus threshold monitoring, and automated filings, merchants connect a third-party extension from the Adobe Commerce Marketplace such as Zamp, Avalara, or TaxCloud during or after store setup.
What options exist for Adobe Commerce sales tax compliance?
TaxCloud provides calculation and filing for Adobe Commerce merchants through the SST program in SST member states. Merchants who need compliance across all 50 states, or who require registrations, notice management, and audit support, should evaluate a managed service option.
Is Avalara AvaTax compatible with Adobe Commerce 2.4?
Yes. Avalara AvaTax is available on the Adobe Commerce Marketplace and supports Adobe Commerce 2.4 cloud, on-premises, and Magento Open Source 2.4. The extension applies rate calculations at checkout against Avalara’s taxability rule set. Avalara Returns, ECM, and state registration services are separate from the base AvaTax calculation product.
