Sales Tax for Stripe
Stripe is a payment gateway that integrates seamlessly with a variety of e-commerce platforms, allowing businesses to process payments from customers worldwide. This integration is critical because it connects a company's website to payment networks, including credit card processors and banks. By doing this, Stripe handles all the heavy lifting involved in financial transactions, from security to compliance, making it an indispensable tool for any online business.
Does Stripe Collect Sales Tax?
Stripe does not automatically calculate and collect sales tax for you. You would either need to sign up for Stripe Tax or use the Tax Rates feature to calculate tax for recurring payments. The Tax Rates feature allows you to define any number of tax rates for invoices, subscriptions, and one-time expenses.
How Sales Tax Works for Stripe
Failing to collect and file sales tax returns for your business can lead to audits and hefty penalties that could harm your business. You must know how sales tax works for your business so you know when to collect, remit, and file returns for your e-commerce store.
Sales Tax Nexus
Sales tax nexus happens when you have a sufficient physical or economic connection to a state or locality that requires you to collect and remit sales tax in that state. The most common ways to establish nexus are:
- Physical nexus: This happens when your business has a physical presence in a state, such as a home, warehouse, or employee in a state.
- Economic nexus: This is common for e-commerce sellers and is triggered when you meet thresholds for sales activity in a state. It usually revolves around sales or transaction numbers.
Zamp Tip
How to Set Up Sales Tax in Stripe
Zamp is the best companion to Stripe regarding sales tax reporting and filing. Our integration performs a live sync on your Stripe Invoice transactions. When Zamp receives your invoice data, we detect the taxability of the transaction’s details based on how you’ve configured them within your Stripe account. This allows us to build a complete and accurate summary report within our software.
After receiving your invoice data, the summary reports allow the Zamp team to account for variances and verify the data’s integrity. This occurs before and during your sales tax return filing in each state you hold liability.
Options to Calculate With Stripe
While Zamp provides a reporting and transaction sync, you must calculate your invoices before payment. Stripe does not offer a solution for calculations for invoices but does offer two options to calculate sales tax:
- Stripe Tax
- Manual tax amounts
Stripe Tax is similar to Zamp’s API calculations endpoints. It requires an origin, considers product taxability, and determines whether or not to return a sales tax amount based on your nexus responsibilities.
Using manual tax amounts requires more work and is catered to specific situations when your invoicing experience needs to be customized. This could include alternative calculation solutions, internal engineering requirements, or custom accounting features adopted by a company.
Integrating Zamp With Stripe
As you integrate with Stripe, you’ll be paired with a dedicated Onboarding and Account Manager who will walk you through the Stripe integration with Zamp. We’ll go through a detailed review of the systems you use. When Stripe is one of them, the Zamp team will walk you through creating a Stripe Restricted Key.

Restricted Keys offer a limited-access experience to give Zamp the data we need to work with. Once the restricted key is available, we will enter it on the backend of our system. An automatic backfill of transactions to the first of the previous calendar year will be imported into Zamp. From there, invoices will sync live to our software.

We’ll reach out before we commit your business’s filings to verify and guarantee accuracy, allowing you to reconcile what we have with what you see in your Stripe records or internally recorded data.
